General: This Cichlid species naturally thrives in heavily covered, shoreline areas of Central American tributaries. It is suggested to mimic natural habitat of the Convict Cichlid by adding floating plants, and driftwood to the aquarium. The Convict Cichlid will frequently rearrange substrate in order to create ideal habitat. The Convict Cichlid is territorially aggressive, and will attack fish larger than itself. Regardless of this behavior, the Convict Cichlid is a frequent breeder.
Fecundity: The Convict Cichlid female will produce up to 300 eggs per clutch, and become extremely defensive once the fry have hatched.
