General: The Boesemani Rainbow (Melanotaenia boesemani) is an endemic fish species of New Guinea. The Boesemani Rainbowfish will reach a length of four inches, and may live for eight years in captivity. Ideally, Rainbowfish will behave most naturally in an aquarium larger than 55 gallons.
Preferred Water Chemistry: Basic (7.2 to 8.4 pH), hard water (10 to 18 dGH)
Aquarium Diet (Omnivore): Brine Shrimp, Blackworms, Omnivore Pellet, Spirulina, Tropical Flake
Dimorphism: The Boesemani Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia boesemani) male will develop a slightly brighter coloration when mature. The female will retain her more basic coloration. The male will also appear to have a greater arch to the dorsal half of the body, in comparison to the female. Also, the female will take on a more gravid appearance when ready to reproduce.
Compatibility: The Boesemani Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia boesemani) are typically compatible with Synodontis, Barb, Danio, Plecostomus, relatively passive South American Cichlids, and other Rainbowfish. It is best to not mix Rainbowfish within the Melanoteaniidae family, as they will likely interbreed resulting in loss of unique characteristics (color) of the species.
