Lemon Jake / Undo Reef Peacock Cichlid
5" - 8"
Minimum Tank Size
Slightly Basic (7.8 to 8.5 pH), Hard Water (10 to 18 KH, 12 to 20 GH), 72 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit
General: This colorful Aulonocara is a member of the scientific family Cichlidae, from Lake Malawi in the East African rift valley. As a juvenile, a 50 gallon tank should be sufficient. Once mature, some individuals may have a temperament that require 100+ gallons.
Fecundity (Reproduction): The Lemon Jake Cichlid is a mouthbrooder, meaning the female will carry fertilized eggs in her mouth until the fry hatch one to two weeks later. In this case, typical fecundity is 10 to 20 eggs per clutch.
Aquarium Diet: Spirulina, brine shrimp, blackworms, cichlid flake/pellet
Compatibility: A good match for less aggressive Mbuna, Peacocks, and Haplochromis. This species will be most functional in aquaria with large groups of Cichlids, as their attention will be diverted from an individual. The "overstock" technique prevents an aggressive male from focusing on a weaker individual, but demands more frequent water changes to compensate for increased bioload.
Dimorphism: The Lemon Jake Cichlid is a dimorphic species. From an aesthetic perspective, the male will have egg spots on the anal fin, as well as slightly more pointed dorsal and anal fins. The male will morph into a blue, yellow coloration. The female will retain her black, and silver morph. From a behavioral perspective, the male will attempt to control a territory.
