Description
General: The Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is a peaceful, small community species that will colorfully stand out in any aquarium. They are naturally found throughout the Paraguay River Basin and prefer black water (acidic pH, soft water) conditions. This small tetra will only reach a length of two inches and can live up to ten years in captivity.
Fecundity (Reproduction): The female Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) can produce up to 200 eggs per clutch. When attempting to encourage breeding behaviors, it is best to mimic the species natural conditions. Try to maintain an acidic pH of 6, a soft water hardness of 1 to 3 dGH, and a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit.
Preferred Water Chemistry: Acidic (5.5 to 7.2 pH), soft water hardness (1 to 6 dGH)
Aquarium Diet: Brine Shrimp, Baby Brine Shrimp, Blackworms, Omnivore flakes, Omnivore pellets, Spirulina
Dimorphism: Once mature, the female Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) will take on a more gravid appearance. Therefore, the blue lateral line will appear to curve more harshly towards the dorsal fin than in male Neon Tetra.
Compatibility: The Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is best kept with other small schooling species such as Hatchetfish, Danio, Rasbora, and Corydoras. Although the preferred water chemistry is different, it is possible to be kept with the Livebearers (Guppy, Swordtail, Platy).
