Description


General: the Red Top hongi (Labidochromis sp. Hongi) is an African member of the Cichlidae family from Lake Malawi. Once mature, the very colorful adult can reach a length of up to six inches. Being a member of the scientific genus Labidochromis, this Cichlid will exhibit vast amounts of color, as well as breeding behaviors.

Fecundity: The Red Top Hongi will produce up to 50 eggs per clutch.

Preferred Water Chemistry: Slightly Basic (7.2 to 8.6 pH), Hard Water (12+ dGH)

Aquarium Diet (Herbivore): Brine Shrimp, Spirulina, herbivore pellet

Dimorphism: Male Red Top Hongi (Labidochromis sp. "Hongi") will have elongated dorsal, and anal fins in comparison to the female. Male Red Top Hongi will develop a brighter coloration, as the female will retain a more subtle brightness. The male will also have egg spots on the anal fin that will be utilized during the reproductive process.

Compatibility: The Red Top Hongi (Labidochromis sp. Hongi) are typically compatible with other African Mbuna, Haplochromis, and Compressiceps.
